EcOlympics raised over £800 for a charity

After winning the Inspiring Enterprise Challenge earlier this year, the winning team from ESOL department put their idea of EcOlympics into action on 15th June which turned out to be a very successful event.

The event involved various sports competitions and eco activities such as potato peeling, bottle knock out etc… The students also organised an international food and drinks fair as part of the programme. The day started at 12.00 noon and both students and lecturers were participating in the fun activities throughout the day.

Ameeta Jethwa, ESOL Lecturer, was very happy to see her students’ idea turn into reality: ”I cannot express how proud I am of my students’ achievements. They were the only ESOL students at the Inspiring Enterprise Challenge and they won. The five students had been in this country only for a year, so they had to work very hard on their English. The day before the conference, they stayed after College and we prepared for their presentation for 6 hours.

The students managed to raise over £800 for NECT (a charity in Kenya). It seeks to support young people in Kenya and in the UK to know more about the physical environment and how to sustain it, and to learn more about each other and their social and cultural environments. The fund will go to buy two non-indigenous dairy goats and set up a goat breeding station so a co-operative of young entrepreneurs can cross-breed their goats, producing animals with a greater resilience to local diseases as well as a much higher milk yield.

The event rounded off with a certificate distribution from Pat Carvalho, Harrow College Vice Principal.
